Chios is well known for being Homer's birthplace and the mastic tree which is used to produce an alcoholic drink and also as a chewing gum. The island is close to the Turkish coast and a regular ferry boat service is available. Chios has some fine beaches and ruins of fine examples of Byzantine history.
