 The most charming of the Ionian Islands makes Corfu a popular destination. The 19C very popular with French Italians and Austrian tourists. There are plenty of beaches for swimming and are very busy at summertime.

 

Worth visiting

Paleo Frourio: The ancient citadel separated by the main island by a canal .

Spianada: Full of gardens and trees and in the middle a neoclassical rotunda in memory of the first high commissioner Maitland.

Agios Spyridonas: 16C church dedicated to St. Spyridon who is patron of the island.

Town Hall : Built the 17C and formerly was a theater and is one of the finest Venetian monuments.

Ahilio: Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known as Sisi) designed the palace. The building is of a neo-classical style and dedicated to Achilles. When the princess was assassinated in Geneva , the palace stood empty until Kaiser Wilhelm II bought it and renovated.

- By Air: More than 5 flights a day from Athens , duration 50 minutes.
   Plenty of charter flights from many European cities.
- By Ferry boat: The services that start from Patras with destination Ancona and Brindisi stop both ways
   of the trip to Corfu .
-  From Igoumenitsa : duration 1hr 55 mins.
- By bus from Athens and Thessalonica.
